City becomes a theatre
«We paint our world as we see it, not as it really is. […] You make things that you believe is the real world… That’s the magic of theatre…» – Alekos Fassianos
Have you ever seen passers-by with straw in their hands, musicians singing on balconies, feathered heroes working on grey roofs? With the city as his point of reference, Alekos Fassianos painted on photographs, incorporating a fantasy world among real snapshots of everyday life. The educational programme draws inspiration from Fassianos’ painted photographs and the painter’s special relationship with the theatre from his childhood, when he was making improvised heroes out of paper and experimenting with the magic of shadow theatre. Using figures that “escaped” from Fassianos’ paintings and images of a contemporary city, students put on an original improvisational shadow theatre performance that evolves every minute.
During the programme, children discover the original ” Fassianos’ “Little Shadow Theatre” and the paper figures of the painter, while they are guided around the space through an audio narration. The children’s performance is filmed and the digital archive is sent to the school.
