Alekos Fassianos: Sailing to Byzantium
October 24 – December 31, 2024 | Zeyrek Çinili Hamam
Curated by Anlam de Coster

The historic Zeyrek Çinili Hamam presents the exhibition “Alekos Fassianos: Sailing to Byzantium” from October 24 to December 31, 2024. The exhibition offers a rare chance to experience the works of renowned Greek artist Alekos Fassianos, curated by Anlam de Coster in collaboration with the Alekos Fassianos Museum in Athens. The first institutional – museum exhibition in the city.

Set in the recently uncovered Byzantine cistern, the exhibition draws inspiration from William Butler Yeats’ poem and creates a dialogue between history, myth, and art. Fassianos’ works, influenced by Greek mythology and Byzantine iconography, are displayed alongside historical ship graffiti, which were discovered in the cistern and date back to the construction of the hammam in the 16th century.

This temporary exhibition, featuring five never-before-seen works, marks the first institutional show of Fassianos in Türkiye, including a newly revealed painting of Istanbul.
